Helen Pham and the Birth of Cánh Buồm Center
Helen Pham, a Vietnamese-American entrepreneur and TESOL instructor, with a BA in Teaching English Literature and an MBA, has always cherished her cultural heritage. Growing up in Vietnam, the language was as natural to her as the air she breathed. But after relocating to Boston from Houston and raising her children in a bilingual household, she encountered a challenge she hadn’t expected: her kids struggled to embrace the language that defined so much of who she was.
Their conversations with their grandparents were often limited, and their connection to Vietnamese culture felt fragile. Helen realized that while she had grown up immersed in the language, her children lacked the same environment. This realization, combined with her deep love for Vietnamese, inspired her to take action.
The Vision for Vietnamese Cánh Buồm Center
In 2025, Helen launched the Vietnamese Cánh Buồm Language and Training Center, a modern platform designed to help families like hers bridge the cultural and linguistic divide. The name, meaning "sail" or "canvas," symbolized the journey of discovery and connection that learning Vietnamese offers. With full support from her husband, Dr. Son Pham, a researcher in teacher preparation and education technology, Helen envisioned a program that went beyond language, focusing on a deep love for culture, family, and identity.

After a comprehensive review of resources from both Vietnam and the global Vietnamese diaspora, educational researchers at the Nha Viet Institute have independently recognized the Cánh Buồm Curriculum as a Common Core Standard in Vietnamese language education. Rooted in modern pedagogical principles, the curriculum emphasizes cultural relevance, holistic learning, emotional engagement, contemporary vocabulary, and an apolitical approach. Expanding on the Cánh Buồm Curriculum, the Nha Viet Institute actively engages in research and development to refine teaching methods, learning strategies, and Vietnamese fluency assessment practices.
